Ignition Ballast Resistor 1962-1972 Mopar Models Replacement ballast resistor for 1962-1972 models. The ballast resistor is used in conjunction with the ignition coil. At low speeds, the ballast resistor heats up. The increased temperature causes the ignition system resistance to increase. At high speeds, the resistor cools, reducing the ignition system resistance. When the starter is used, the resistor is bypassed, allowing full power to flow to the ignition primary circuit
